I too followed the redshirt thing and have to disagree a little.

Many of the Thai english language tweeters quoted a news source known as ASTV.

ASTV is owned wholesale by the almost assassinated Yellow Shirt/PAD leader, Sondhi.

It is a complete propaganda tool that releases an endless stream of utter BS, rumour, spin and lies. Everyone knows this except PAD supporting Yellow Shirts.

Most of the Thai tweeters Spooner took on had yellow themed photos and some made no effort to hide both their bias and affiliation.

It was only after Spooner came on the scene that any balance seemed to develop. The simple evidence was that not one Thai tweeted in favour of the Red Shirts and not one openly questioned government sources.

To understand Spooner's reluctance to accept the government or army's line I suggest you look at the recent Rohingya refugee case (100s of refugees very likely murdered by Thai army) and the history of Thai military intervention (Tak Bai, October 1976, 1992).

On each occasion massacres have taken place and each time cover ups, lies, bodies disappearing has happened.

That doesn't mean it happened with the Red Shirts - I personally agree with the Human Rights' Watch call for an independent investigation into all the violence so that full accountability and transparency can emerge.

I'm a bit late to be commenting on this post, but I have been having a good time poking around on your blog an I can't help but speak up on this issue. Your post seems oddly coy. You clearly think that decent health care in an affluent society is a basic right--or whatever word you want to use--so why not say so a little more clearly, rather than taking such an uncertain, questioning pose? There's no need to act like this is not a question that most people in the world settled a long time ago--the UN said so 60 years ago, in its Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

See the next posting on Charter 08 -- though this appears to be something that intellectuals are paying attention to rather than ordinary people.

It is interesting to read this essay. It seems that schools of China and schools of America are located in different planets.

When Americans are worried about graduation rates and college attendance rates, the Ministry of Education of China is trying to de-emphasize this criterion and move this focus to comprehensive education. However, graduation rates and college attendance is still the first concern of schools in China and also the most significant standard for competition among schools. Therefore, the Ministry of Education in China is not worried about how much knowledge Chinese students have learned, but worried about their growth in other aspects.

It is interesting to see that American students get to school from 9:00am to 3:00pm, compared with Chinese students getting to school from 8:00am to 5:00 or 6:00pm with lots of homework to do at home.

Maybe American schools and Chinese schools are located at the two extremes of a continuum.

Was there/is there a potential for self-selection bias in the data though? From the summary, the study seems to have taken up two sets of individuals -- those who enrolled and followed through (with a progression of income corresponding to how they made it) and those who could have enrolled but did not (non-attenders). This is of course a counterfactual, but might it be that those who did attend might have ended up doing better regardless? Should the equation really be "access to higher education" + "some minimum level of dedication/value of that education" (leading one to attend) = higher economic output over the long term?
